Christmas travel 2026
Christmas travel 2026 stretches through New Year, because Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027. As of 27 Oct 2026, TSA and AAA had not published a forecast for this season. The expected heavier days are Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December, Monday 21 December through Wednesday 23 December, Sunday 27 December, and Sunday 3 January 2027. The holidays themselves are the days to aim for on the road, with the caveat that New Year’s Day can still be a busy day to fly home.

Verified calendar
The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Christmas Day 2026 as Friday 25 December, and New Year’s Day 2027 as Friday 1 January. Christmas Eve is therefore Thursday 24 December 2026, and New Year’s Eve is Thursday 31 December 2026. In the prior season, OPM lists Christmas Day 2025 as Thursday 25 December and New Year’s Day 2026 as Thursday 1 January. The weekday shift is one day. That is why a 2025 date should not be copied onto 2026 as if it were the same stamp on the calendar.
What the latest official notes actually measured
On 22 December 2025, TSA said it was ready to screen a projected 44.3 million travelers from Friday 19 December 2025 through Sunday 4 January 2026. It expected the heaviest volume to be about 2.86 million on Sunday 28 December 2025, followed by 19, 20, 21, 27, and 29 December. The busiest day of the prior year, TSA said, was Friday 27 December, just under 2.85 million.
On 10 December 2025, AAA projected 122.4 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles from home from Saturday 20 December 2025 through Thursday 1 January 2026. On air, AAA said the days leading up to Christmas Day were the most expensive, while flying on the holiday itself was cheaper. It also said New Year’s flights were pricey, with many people returning on New Year’s Day or on Sunday 4 January 2026. AAA booking data in that release put a roundtrip domestic ticket at nearly $900, 7 percent higher than the year before. That is a 2025 booking average, not a 2026 fare.
INRIX, in the same AAA release, expected Christmas week to be busier on the roads than New Year’s week. Interstates would be extra congested the weekend before Christmas, on Saturday and Sunday. Friday 26 December 2025, the day after a Thursday Christmas, was also expected to be busy. INRIX said the holidays themselves, Christmas and New Year’s Day, are typically the lightest traffic days, unless a crash or severe weather intervenes. Hertz, via AAA, expected Saturday 20 December 2025 to be the busiest rental pickup day. Orlando, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, and Phoenix led rental demand in that 2025 note.
AAA says not to compare those person trip totals with TSA screening counts. They count different things.
Expected peak days, labeled as expectations
As of 27 Oct 2026, the list below is a planning expectation. It is not a TSA or AAA forecast for 2026. It takes the 2025 pattern and moves it onto a Friday Christmas and a Friday New Year’s Day.
| 2026 or 2027 date | Why it is on this list | Status as of 27 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December 2026 | The weekend before a Friday Christmas. INRIX said the weekend before Christmas is the congested road window. | Driving expectation. Also a plausible outbound air cluster, by analogy with TSA’s heavy 19 to 21 December 2025. |
| Monday 21 December through Wednesday 23 December 2026 | The last weekdays before Christmas Eve. AAA said the days leading up to Christmas were the expensive air days in 2025. | Expected heavier outbound flying. Not a published 2026 fare. |
| Thursday 24 December and Friday 25 December 2026 | Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. AAA said flying on the holiday itself was cheaper. INRIX said the holidays are typically the lightest road days. | Expected lighter days, if your family plan allows them. |
| Saturday 26 December 2026 | The day after Christmas. In 2025 that role fell on Friday 26 December because Christmas was Thursday. | Expected busy roads. The weekday does not match 2025, so do not reuse the 2025 clock times. |
| Sunday 27 December 2026 | The Sunday after a Friday Christmas. In 2025 TSA’s heaviest expected day was the Sunday inside the holiday gap, 28 December. | Expected heavy air and road return. Expectation only. |
| Thursday 31 December 2026 and Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. INRIX treated the holidays as the light road days. AAA said many travelers fly home on New Year’s Day, and that those tickets were pricey in 2025. | Roads may be lighter. Air on New Year’s Day may still be busy. Hold both ideas at once. |
| Sunday 3 January 2027 | The Sunday after New Year’s Day. In the Thursday New Year of 2026, AAA pointed to Sunday 4 January as the extra weekend return. | Expected heavy return in the air. Expectation only. |
We are not reprinting the 2025 hour by hour driving table against 2026 dates. Those clock times were tied to weekdays that do not all match. The durable INRIX point is simpler. Leave early when you must drive on a peak expectation day, and do not assume Christmas Day or New Year’s Day will be crowded on the interstate just because the airports might be.
Book by guidance
As of 27 Oct 2026 there is no official book by date for Christmas travel 2026. Christmas Day is 59 days, about eight weeks away. New Year’s Day is a week after that. Check the airline for the specific day, then the official hotel site for the room type, the fees, and the cancellation terms.
AAA published the 2025 end of year forecast on 10 December 2025. TSA published its checkpoint note on 22 December 2025. Recheck both agencies in December 2026 before you treat this page as the last word. The nearly $900 roundtrip figure is AAA’s December 2025 booking average. It is not a 2026 quote, and it is not a luxury hotel rate.
Festive luxury stays in cities we cover
A festive stay here means a neighborhood that can hold a long meal and a walk, not a claim that any hotel is dressed for the holiday or has a room left. We do not publish nightly rates. Open the official site after you pick the city page.
- New York. The Rockefeller Center tree is lit Wednesday 2 December 2026, from 7 to 10 p.m. ET. Where to stand, how to watch, a 3 night shape, and hotels a short walk from the plaza are on the Rockefeller tree lighting guide.
- Savannah. Historic District squares and a courtyard inn suit a Christmas walk more than a arena midnight. Savannah hotels and the Savannah weekend guide.
- New Orleans. Sleep in the Garden District if the French Quarter is for one evening. The large hotels on the CBD edge are the other product. New Orleans hotels, where to stay in New Orleans, and New Orleans & Company for the visitor calendar. Flights: to New Orleans.
- Charleston. Holiday weeks tighten the small inns first. Charleston hotels and the Charleston Area CVB.
- Austin. South Congress or a downtown design hotel, with a buffer if a civic event lands on your weekend. Austin hotels, the Austin hub, and Visit Austin.
- San Antonio. A River Walk hotel for the lighted water, or the Pearl District if you want dinner quieter than the boats. San Antonio hotels and Visit San Antonio. The Texas pairing is Austin hotels.
- Nashville. One Broadway night, a Gulch or Music Row bed. Nashville hotels and Visit Music City.
- Miami. AAA’s December 2025 domestic booking list put Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Tampa near the top, behind Orlando. That is last season’s demand, not a 2026 ranking, and it is a warm weather alternative to a northern Christmas. Miami hotels, where to stay in Miami, Greater Miami CVB, and New York to Miami.
- Tampa. A warm Christmas walk is Hyde Park or the Riverwalk. Gasparilla is a January parade, not this week. Tampa hotels and the Tampa hub.
- Jacksonville. A warm Christmas can be the Atlantic at Ponte Vedra or Amelia Island, or a quieter downtown river night. THE PLAYERS is a March tournament, not this week. Jacksonville hotels and the Jacksonville hub.
- Denver. A city base when the trip is restaurants and a short mountain day, not a beach. Denver hotels and VISIT DENVER. Winter weather can move a flight. Build a longer connection than you would in October. If the trip is the mountain itself, from Christmas through New Year, use the ski pass deadlines and luxury ski hotels guide.
New Year’s Eve city ideas
These are neighborhood ideas, not ticket offers. We do not list prices or claim that a countdown event has seats. Check the official tourism board for what is actually on the calendar, then sleep somewhere that still works on the morning of 1 January.
- Miami Beach. Plan one night out and a morning that does not depend on a 7 a.m. flight. A Beach hotel or a Brickell hotel are different products. The Miami Beach day plan is a pacing note, not a 31 December script. Confirm events with the Greater Miami CVB.
- New Orleans. The Quarter is the street celebration. A Garden District hotel is the quieter sleep, with a ride home. Confirm the night with New Orleans & Company rather than a prior year’s map.
- Nashville. Broadway will be the loud version of the holiday. Stay in the Gulch if you want one window of it, not a room above it. Visit Music City is the calendar.
- Austin. South Congress and downtown can host the night without a single official countdown we are prepared to describe here. Check Visit Austin before you assume a hotel roof is the event.
- Savannah or Charleston. Choose these when midnight should be a dinner, not a street grid. Use the hotel pages above, and do not expect us to name a party price.
If New Year's Eve is the hockey weekend in Salt Lake City, use the Winter Classic 2027 guide for Rice-Eccles Stadium, downtown and University of Utah hotels, the UTA note, and what is actually published for that night in the city. The next long weekend after New Year is MLK weekend 2027.
If the trip is really Thanksgiving timing, use best days to fly Thanksgiving 2026. Spring and the Ryder Cup are on spring break 2027 luxury destinations and Ryder Cup 2027 Adare Manor hotels.
FAQ
When is Christmas travel 2026 busiest?
As of 27 Oct 2026, TSA and AAA had not published a forecast for Christmas 2026. Christmas Day is Friday 25 December 2026 and New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027. The expectation, drawn from December 2025 official notes and shifted because those holidays fell on Thursday, is a heavier outbound period on Saturday 19 December, Sunday 20 December, and Monday 21 through Wednesday 23 December, then heavier return days on Sunday 27 December and Sunday 3 January 2027.
What are the lighter days to travel at Christmas 2026?
AAA booking data published 10 December 2025 said the days leading up to Christmas were the most expensive to fly, and that flying on the holiday itself was cheaper. INRIX said Christmas and New Year’s Day are typically the lightest days on the roads. For 2026 that points to Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, New Year’s Eve, Thursday 31 December, and New Year’s Day, Friday 1 January, as the lighter driving days. New Year’s Day can still be a busy air return. This is an expectation, not a 2026 forecast.
When should I book Christmas travel 2026?
No agency has published a book by date for this season. As of 27 Oct 2026, Christmas Day is 59 days, about eight weeks away. Check airline sites and official hotel sites for the dates you want. AAA published its 2025 end of year forecast on 10 December 2025, and TSA published its holiday note on 22 December 2025, so recheck those pages in December 2026.

Methodology and limits
Written 27 Oct 2026 by Noravelle Stays. Holiday dates are from the OPM schedules for 2026 and 2027. Peak days are expectations based on the TSA release of 22 December 2025 and the AAA and INRIX release of 10 December 2025. Those notes describe a Thursday Christmas and a Thursday New Year. We did not find a 2026 or 2027 forecast from either agency on this update. We do not invent fares, event tickets, or hotel availability.
