Best days to fly Thanksgiving 2026

The dates that are fixed

As of 27 Oct 2026, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management federal holiday schedule lists Thanksgiving Day 2026 as Thursday 26 November. That weekday is the same as Thanksgiving 2025, which OPM lists as Thursday 27 November 2025. The match matters, because the latest official travel notes were written for a Thursday holiday and can be shifted onto the same weekdays in 2026. They still are not a 2026 forecast.

What officials have actually said

As of 27 Oct 2026, a search of TSA and AAA newsrooms did not turn up a Thanksgiving 2026 forecast. Those notes have landed in mid to late November in recent years. Use the 2025 releases until a 2026 note replaces them.

• Air, national. On 21 November 2025, TSA said it expected to screen more than 17.8 million people from Tuesday 25 November to Tuesday 2 December 2025, with over 3 million on Sunday 30 November 2025. TSA called that Sunday, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, one of the busiest travel days in its history.
• Air, returns and the holiday itself. On 17 November 2025, AAA said it is cheaper to fly on Thanksgiving Day itself, and that Sunday and Monday are the busiest return days. AAA also said its booking data put a roundtrip domestic Thanksgiving flight at about $700, similar to the year before. That is a 2025 booking average, not a 2026 fare.
• Rental cars. In that same 17 November 2025 note, AAA said its rental partner Hertz expected Wednesday to be the busiest vehicle pickup day.
• Driving. INRIX, quoted by AAA on 17 November 2025, expected Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to be the most congested periods before Thanksgiving Day, and heavy traffic most of Sunday for people driving home.

AAA also warns that its person trip forecasts and TSA checkpoint counts measure different things. Do not add them together. Checkpoint counts include each time a traveler enters a sterile area. AAA counts a round trip as one person trip.

Expected flying days for 2026

Shifted onto 2026, and labeled as expectations as of 27 Oct 2026:

If you can choose, the practical reading of that pattern is to fly out on Thanksgiving morning, or earlier in the week than Wednesday, and to fly home on Friday 27 November or after Monday 30 November. Friday is not a day TSA or AAA named as a 2026 best day. It is the gap between the holiday and the Sunday and Monday returns they did name. Tuesday 24 November was inside the 2025 TSA screening window, so treat it as busy rather than as a quiet outbound.

Airport specific notes from 2025 do not automatically describe 2026. TSA in New Orleans said its two busiest local days would be the Wednesday before and the Sunday after. TSA in Philadelphia named Tuesday and Wednesday before, plus Sunday. TSA in Miami named the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday after Thanksgiving. Read a fresh airport note if TSA posts one this November.

Expected driving days for 2026

The clock times below are the 17 November 2025 INRIX windows, copied onto the same weekdays in 2026. Thanksgiving was a Thursday in both years. They are a planning expectation until AAA publishes a 2026 table. Times are local to the metro INRIX was describing.

The worst driving expectation is Wednesday 25 November late morning through evening on the way out, and most of Sunday 29 November on the way home. The best driving expectation is Thanksgiving Day, or an early morning departure on the other days. AAA also said crashes, construction, and weather can erase a quiet window. Its 2025 forecast included a Denver example, Pueblo to Denver on I-25 on Tuesday afternoon. If you are driving into Denver, treat Tuesday 24 November and Wednesday 25 November afternoons as likely busy until a 2026 metro table exists. Book by guidance

As of 27 Oct 2026, neither TSA nor AAA has published a book by date for Thanksgiving 2026. The holiday is Thursday 26 November, 30 days, about four weeks from this update. That is close enough that the seat and the room you want may already be the ones left, not the ones you would have chosen in August.

Check the airline for the day you can actually fly, then open the official hotel site for the neighborhood you want. AAA published its 2025 Thanksgiving forecast on 17 November 2025. TSA published its national Thanksgiving note on 21 November 2025. If those agencies follow the same calendar, a 2026 update may appear in November 2026. A ski Thanksgiving is a different trip. Thursday 26 November through Sunday 29 November 2026 is the week. • Nashville. Sleep in the Gulch or on Music Row if Broadway is a visit rather than a bedroom. Nashville hotels and Visit Music City. Pair the stay with flights to Nashville or New York to Nashville.
• New Orleans. The Garden District is the quieter holiday house. The French Quarter is the street holiday. New Orleans hotels and New Orleans & Company.
• Savannah and Austin. Squares and a courtyard, or South Congress and downtown. Savannah hotels and Austin hotels.
• San Antonio. The River Walk is the festive walk, and the Pearl District is the calmer sleep. King William is an outing, not a hotel on our list. San Antonio hotels and Visit San Antonio. Pair it with Austin hotels when the trip is both Texas cities.
• Miami and Tampa. AAA’s 17 November 2025 booking list ranked Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa among its top domestic Thanksgiving destinations. That is 2025 demand, not a 2026 ranking. • Jacksonville. A warm Thanksgiving can be a Ponte Vedra or Amelia Island resort, or a downtown river night, and those are different drives from the airport. Jacksonville hotels and the Jacksonville hub.
