Winter Classic 2027 in Salt Lake City: where to stay, getting there and New Year's Eve plans

The 2027 Discover NHL Winter Classic is Thursday 31 December 2026 at 4:00 p.m. MT, with the Utah Mammoth hosting the Colorado Avalanche at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. This guide covers downtown hotels, two stays near the University of Utah, a Park City ski add on, the UTA note for getting to the stadium, a cold weather packing note drawn from climate normals, and what is actually published for New Year's Eve in the city. It does not quote a resale ticket price, and it does not claim that a room or a seat is still open.

The game

The NHL Winter Classic FAQ, read on 27 Oct 2026, answers the basics in one place. The teams are the Colorado Avalanche and the Utah Mammoth. The venue is Rice-Eccles Stadium, 451 1400 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84112. The time is Thursday 31 December 2026 at 4:00 p.m. MT. The same page says the Mammoth shoot twice toward the north end of the stadium and the Avalanche shoot twice toward the south end, and it says those assignments can change.

NHL Public Relations, in a 10 June 2026 note, calls the Mammoth the host and describes Rice-Eccles Stadium as the football venue on the University of Utah campus. That note says the game is the first regular season outdoor game for the Mammoth, in the franchise's third year, and the fourth regular season outdoor appearance for the Avalanche. The NHL national television schedule for the 2026 to 2027 season places the game on TNT at 6 p.m. ET on 31 December, which is the same start as 4:00 p.m. MT.

Tickets, official channel only

The 10 June 2026 NHL Public Relations note says tickets would go on sale at 10 a.m. MT on Tuesday 16 June 2026 through Ticketmaster, which it calls the official ticketing partner of the NHL, on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last. The FAQ, still worded that way when we read it on 27 Oct 2026, points fans to that Ticketmaster path. The FAQ also says this is a fully mobile ticket event, and that parking information will be released at a later date.

As of 27 Oct 2026 we do not state whether any seat remains. We do not quote a resale price. Use the NHL FAQ and the Ticketmaster link on that page, then stop if the seat you want is not offered there.

Best hotels downtown

These three downtown hotels are real, and each address comes from the hotel's own site. A name here is not a room for 31 December. Open the official site for the total, the fees, and the cancellation terms. Read how we pick luxury hotels before you treat a photo as a promise about the room, and how to choose a luxury hotel for the guest checklist.

  • The Grand America Hotel, 555 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84111. The hotel's directions page calls the location the heart of downtown and says the TRAX Green Line stops less than one block away at Courthouse Station. It also says the hotel offers valet and self parking in a covered garage. We are not printing a parking price.
  • Little America Hotel Salt Lake City, 500 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. The hotel FAQ states that address. The directions page also places the hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. We did not find a drive time from this hotel to Rice-Eccles Stadium on that page, so we are not printing one.
  • Kimpton Hotel Monaco Salt Lake City, 15 West 200 South, Salt Lake City, UT 84101. The hotel site publishes that address. It is the boutique downtown pick in this set. We are not stating a rate or a distance to the stadium.

If the trip starts or ends in Denver, the Avalanche city this site already edits, use Denver hotels and flights to Denver. Those pages are not Salt Lake City hotels, and they are not a bed near Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Hotels near the University of Utah and Rice-Eccles Stadium

We did not find a hotel whose own site places the front door on the Rice-Eccles block. The two stays below are the University area hotels we could verify. Neither listing is an availability claim.

  • University Guest House, 110 South Fort Douglas Boulevard, Salt Lake City, UT 84113. The hotel says it is the on campus hotel in the Historic Fort Douglas part of the University of Utah, with 170 rooms in the main building and 30 suites next door. The same page says it is walking distance to campus, sports venues, and some hospitals, and that it is adjacent to a TRAX stop. The location page names that stop as Fort Douglas on the Red Line.
  • Salt Lake City Marriott University Park, 480 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. The Marriott overview says the hotel is next to the University of Utah. That is a Research Park address, not a sentence that says the hotel is beside the stadium. We are not adding a walking time the hotel does not print.

A Park City ski day before or after

A ski day is a separate night in Park City or Deer Valley, not a room that puts you at the faceoff. We do not print a drive time from either hotel to Rice-Eccles Stadium, because neither hotel states one. Last updated 27 Oct 2026.

  • Montage Deer Valley, 9100 Marsac Avenue, Park City, UT 84060. The resort information page says the hotel is less than ten minutes from Park City's Main Street, approximately 38 miles from Salt Lake City International Airport, and set at 8,200 feet, with ski in and ski out access to Deer Valley Resort. The same page points readers to an altitude note. Use that note if a high elevation night is new for you.
  • Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley, 7700 Stein Way, Park City, UT 84060. The hotel site says the lodge is mid mountain at Deer Valley with direct access to lift served skiing, and about five minutes from Historic Main Street in Park City.

Whether the mountain is open is a resort question, not a guess. Deer Valley Resort said on 16 September 2026 that it is slated to open to the public on 5 December 2026, conditions permitting. Park City Mountain's winter hours page lists daily lift operations from 20 November 2026 through 19 April 2027, and it says operating hours and dates depend on weather and conditions. A ski day on 30 December 2026 or 1 January 2027 falls inside both of those published windows. That is a calendar check, not a promise that a lift will turn that morning. Epic and Ikon deadlines, plus ski in, ski out hotels at Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen Snowmass, and Jackson Hole, are on the ski pass deadlines guide.

Getting to Rice-Eccles Stadium

Last updated 27 Oct 2026. UTA's Event Service page lists the NHL Winter Classic on 31 December 2026 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The how to get there line is TRAX Red Line to Stadium Station. The introduction on that page says UTA provides enhanced service for events when possible, and then it says the events listed below are not Ticket As Fare events. Fare, the page says, can be bought at station ticket kiosks, on a UTA bus with exact cash, or in the Transit app. The Winter Classic entry does not publish extra trips, a frequency, or a shuttle. A different event on the same page, Christkindlmarkt, does mention a shuttle from the Rice-Eccles parking lot. The hockey listing does not. The TRAX Red Line schedule is the timetable to use until UTA posts something more specific.

Do not assume a hockey ticket is free fare. UTA's separate Ticket As Fare page says all 2026 University of Utah on campus sporting events are Ticket As Fare, with the Red Line to Stadium Station or Fort Douglas Station. That section does not name the Winter Classic. The Event Service page, which does name the game, says its listed events are not Ticket As Fare.

The NHL FAQ says parking information will be released later. We are not describing a stadium lot, a road closure, or a walking route from a downtown hotel.

Two hotel direction pages are useful for the night you are not at the stadium. The Grand America says the Green Line stops less than one block from the hotel at Courthouse Station. The University Guest House says that from downtown you board the Red Line at the station it calls Court House, and that from the airport you take the Green Line to that station and transfer to the Red Line toward the University, getting off at Fort Douglas. Those are hotel directions to the hotels, not UTA's game day instruction. For the game, follow the Event Service line: Red Line to Stadium Station.

Cold weather packing

Last updated 27 Oct 2026. This is not a forecast for the stadium on 31 December 2026. The National Weather Service Salt Lake City climate book (the book page says it was last updated 17 March 2026) includes a daily maximum and minimum table. For 31 December that table lists a normal high of 37 F and a normal low of 24 F. The record high for the date is 62 F in 1996. The record low is minus 7 F in 1990. A separate monthly table lists a normal December average maximum of 39.0 F and a normal December average temperature of 32.2 F, both for 1991 to 2020.

The practical reading is that a typical 31 December afternoon in the Salt Lake City record sits near freezing, and that the same date has been far colder. An outdoor seat is not a walk between buildings. Bring a wind layer, a hat, gloves, and warm socks, and a layer you can take off if the afternoon is milder than the normal. The NHL says the ticket is mobile. A phone in a cold pocket is part of the plan, because the ticket lives on it. Read weather.gov for Salt Lake City again before you travel. A day of forecast does not belong on this page until the National Weather Service is close enough to publish one.

New Year's Eve in Salt Lake City

Last updated 27 Oct 2026. We looked for a 31 December 2026 dinner or public event from an official or named organizer in Salt Lake City. What we found is last year's night, clearly dated, and one April quote that is not a ticket page.

  • Visit Salt Lake posted "How to Celebrate New Year's in Salt Lake" on 10 December 2025. It describes the night that ended 2025 and began 2026, including Last Hurrah at The Gateway. It is not a 2026 to 2027 calendar.
  • The Gateway's Last Hurrah 2025 page says that event has passed. It was the free downtown celebration on 31 December 2025. We did not find a 2026 Last Hurrah page on the Gateway site on 27 Oct 2026.
  • The Downtown Alliance week of 23 December 2025 pointed readers at that same Last Hurrah. That note is for the prior New Year's Eve.
  • NHL.com, in an article with a published time of 25 April 2026, quotes Utah owner Ryan Smith on a hope to pair the game with a concert and a ball drop at the Delta Center, and with a weekend of programming. As of 27 Oct 2026 we did not find a Delta Center or Mammoth page that lists a lineup, a start time, or a ticket link for that night. The quote is not a confirmation that a concert is on sale.

Until Visit Salt Lake, The Gateway, or the Downtown Alliance publishes a 31 December 2026 listing, this guide will not name a fireworks time, a prix fixe menu, or a countdown. Recheck those three sites. The wider holiday note on this site is Christmas travel 2026, which also links here. A New York Christmas built around the tree is the Rockefeller tree lighting guide. The next long weekend after New Year is MLK weekend 2027.

Book by guidance

As of 27 Oct 2026, no airline, hotel, or the NHL has published a book by date that we can repeat for this trip. The game is Thursday 31 December 2026, 65 days from this update. Check the official hotel site for the nights you want, then the airline for the day you can actually fly. A flexible rate matters if a school holiday or a work day on Friday 1 January 2027, which the OPM 2027 holiday schedule lists as New Year's Day, changes who is traveling with you.

The rate comparison button below is the same slot city hotel pages use. It is not a live booking link unless the site config points it at an approved program. The primary action is the official hotel website.

How do I get to Rice-Eccles Stadium?

On 27 Oct 2026, the UTA Event Service page listed the NHL Winter Classic on 31 December 2026 at Rice-Eccles Stadium and said to take the TRAX Red Line to Stadium Station. The NHL FAQ says parking information will be released later. University of Utah sporting events are a separate Ticket As Fare program and the Winter Classic is not named there.

Are 2027 Winter Classic tickets still on sale?

NHL Public Relations said on 10 June 2026 that tickets would go on sale at 10 a.m. MT on 16 June 2026 through Ticketmaster, the official ticketing partner, first come, first served, while supplies last. The NHL FAQ still points fans to that Ticketmaster path and says the game is a fully mobile ticket event. As of 27 Oct 2026 this guide does not state whether any seat remains, and it does not quote a resale price.

An NHL.com article dated 25 April 2026 quotes a hope for Delta Center programming that night. That quote is not a ticketed event listing.

Methodology and limits

Written 27 Oct 2026 by Noravelle Stays. Game facts are from the NHL FAQ and the 10 June 2026 NHL Public Relations note, with the television time from the NHL national schedule. Transit facts are from rideuta.com pages read on this date. Hotel names, addresses, and location sentences are from each hotel's own site. Climate figures are from the National Weather Service Salt Lake City climate book, not from a forecast. Ski opening language is from Deer Valley's 16 September 2026 release and Park City Mountain's winter hours page. New Year's Eve events are included only when a named organizer published them, and they are dated. We do not invent rates, resale ticket prices, or availability. A closer game day note, including a real forecast, is a later page.
